He goes further to show how to created automatic animation (through expressions) such as automatically rolling the foot as the character takes a step, breathing, automatic muscle flexing, etc. While some controls can be manipulated directly, he shows you how to hook most to sliders in organized property pages. He shows you how to create a rig, and then layer controls all over it. The really excellent information comes in the later chapters of the book, where he discusses the basics, tricks, and advanced proceedures for character rig setup (specific to XSI). This stuff was genuinely useful and interesting, but not really the meat of the book. The next several chapters discuss the "animation process", including things like the necessity of creating a character profile, storyboarding, style and color selection, etc. The first chapter discusses fundamentals of XSI, doing a rushed but adequate job of it.
This book really goes well beyond just using XSI to do character animation. In addition, I will be providing 1.Chris Maraffi Author: Softimage|XSI Character Animation FX & Design About the Author To Chris: I don't know you, but if anyone working at Softimage reads this correspondence, they ought to hire you and pay you whatever you want to rewrite their manuals. IMHO, you can learn XSI at least FIVE TIMES FASTER using this book.

"Just bought Chris Maraffi's new book on XSI titled Softimage|XSI Character Animation f/x & Design and what a difference it makes to learn XSI from someone who not only knows the software, but who REALLY KNOWS HOW TO TEACH! What I have found most helpful is that in addition to really explaining each tool and command in crystal clear terms that I can easily remember, this man shows you when and how to most effectively use the software and how to strategize the most productive workflow to achieve the best results. We are currently getting good reviews from professionals in the field on the Softimage User Group. I have taught this same information in courses that cost thousands of dollars, so I believe this book is more than worth its small price. We also did not publish this to be the first book out there, or to make a quick buck. This book covers these areas in depth, and is currently the most advanced book available. These areas were chosen because they were the most complete in version 1 of the software.
The focus of this book is character skeleton setup and animation. If it was, we would have called the book Softimage|XSI In Depth. In response to the comment that the book seems skimpy, you have to understand that books in this series are not meant to be a complete overview of the software.
